FC Barcelona received heartbreaking news on Saturday evening, following a tragedy at the Camp Nou construction site. The result: a 54-year-old worker died on the site of the future stadium. In the afternoon of Friday, July 24, 2026, the man in question struck a piece of equipment on the site.
Police and rescue services arrived quickly. Despite attempts to revive him, the worker passed away. This tragedy once again casts a shadow over the club’s progress. In recent months, other events have made Camp Nou a site of danger. A company had been singled out for employing workers without papers. Two years earlier, a fight between workers had erupted, leaving six injured.
A Camp Nou Behind Schedule
Since June 1, 2023, Spotify Camp Nou has been under renovation to eventually accommodate a capacity of 105,000 seats by 2028. But since last season, the club has been able to host matches in its venue, reduced to 60,000 spectators. The construction site still needs to complete the installation of the third ring to house the stadium roof.
After using the Montjuïc venue, Barça was supposed to return to Camp Nou in September 2025. It was ultimately two months later that the Catalans resumed their stadium with a capacity to respect.
