More than 120 citizens benefited from cataract screening services for holders of free care books and reduced-fee care books in the regions of Fouchana and Mornag. Among them, forty patients were scheduled to undergo a surgical procedure on May 22 at Habib Thameur University Hospital.

Farhat Zahmoul, the regional health director for Ben Arous, indicated in a statement to the Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) Agency, on the margins of a health caravan organized at the Fouchana intermediate center and carried out this Sunday by several doctors and specialists from Habib Thameur University Hospital for cataract screening for the benefit of several citizens, the majority of whom were elderly, that the beneficiaries of this initiative were distributed as follows: 70 people in the Fouchana region, of whom 20 were taken care of for a surgical operation, and 54 citizens in Mornag, among whom 12 were directed towards medical follow-up and surgical interventions.

Farhat Zahmoul also specified that eight additional cases were also treated for surgical operations, after having previously benefited from cataract screening services at the Hammam Lif intermediate center. He added that all patients involved in cataract extraction operations will receive free of charge all the necessary medications before leaving the hospital.

He stressed that this initiative, organized at the initiative of the Ben Arous regional health directorate in cooperation with the “One Day One Dream” association and the ophthalmology service of Habib Thameur University Hospital, is part of the preparations for the National Eye Health Day, planned for May 22 and 23, as well as in the implementation of the Ministry of Health’s strategy to bring services closer to citizens and to facilitate access for vulnerable and low-income groups to health care, particularly to high-cost surgical interventions.
