For the first time in Tunisia, journalist Afef Al-Gharbi launches an innovative awareness campaign titled “Underwater Messages: Boussi 2050,” pairing media and the environment, and aiming to rethink the collective perception of the risks threatening the Tunisian coasts.
This academic project involves Diwan FM, the Institute of Press and Information Sciences, and the National Institute of Marine Sciences and Technologies. The campaign was officially launched on Sunday, March 29, 2026 on the airwaves of Diwan FM, in the program “Weekend Al-Kif.” Anticipating the future through artificial intelligence The project centers on a virtual digital character named “Boussi,” a marine creature from 2050 to tell the future of the Tunisian coasts.
This character relies on artificial intelligence technologies to transform complex scientific reports into messages that are accessible and humanized, based on field research and analytical models supervised by Dr. Ola Al-Amrouni, a specialist at the National Institute of Marine Sciences and Technologies. Why “Boussi”? The campaign highlights the plant “Posidonia,” the true lungs of the Mediterranean Sea, today threatened with decline in Tunisia. Three major objectives characterize this project: The first objective is to simplify science, that is, to convert complex data into a digital narrative understandable by the general public.
Secondly, promote solutions journalism by going beyond the assessment and proposing concrete paths for protection and sustainability. And finally, to evolve media discourse by encouraging Tunisian media to play an educational role in facing the current climate challenges. An academic and scientific partnership This initiative is the result of a collaboration between the Institute of Press and Information Sciences, as a framework for research and media innovation; the National Institute of Marine Sciences and Technologies, ensuring scientific rigor and a forward-looking dimension, and Diwan FM radio, a media partner to ensure broad dissemination of the message.
“Boussi 2050” is intended as a call for collective vigilance, placing environmental issues at the heart of the public debate and reminding that protecting the sea is not a luxury, but a necessity to preserve the natural resources of future generations.
