The National Institute of Statistics has published a new statistical bulletin comprising a series of demographic and social indicators in Tunisia for the period 2019-2023, revealing notable evolutions in marriage, divorce, birth rates, and mortality.
As for marriage, the number of contracts recorded a decline of about 12.2% between 2019 and 2023, dropping from 83,105 contracts to 72,953. The year 2020 also saw a marked drop compared to 2019, by around 21%, before a relative rebound in 2021 and 2022.
By contrast, despite an upward trend observed between 2021 and 2023, with divorces increasing by about 27.2% — from 12,589 to 16,012 cases — the total number of divorces nonetheless decreased by about 7.5% compared with 2019, the year when 17,306 cases were recorded.
Regarding births, the data show a notable decrease over the studied period. The number of male newborns fell by about 31%, from 100,644 in 2019 to 69,436 in 2023. The number of female newborns also decreased by about 31%, from 95,179 to 65,712.
As for deaths, their number increased by about 40.6% between 2019 and 2021, rising from 76,091 to 107,006, due to coronavirus-related victims. This figure then declined in 2023 by about 27% compared with 2021, to stabilize at 77,968 deaths, a slight increase of 2.5% compared with 2019.
Neonatal mortality data also show a clear downward trend, with a decrease of about 39% between 2019 and 2023, from 2,314 to 1,410 cases.
