The National Trade Union Chamber of Photovoltaics proposes to equip one million Tunisian households with solar panels free of charge, for five years. The stated objective: to alleviate the burden of the energy subsidy.
Dubbed “Energy Citizenship,” this program targets households whose consumption does not exceed 100 kWh per month, reports the TAP agency. The deployment would extend over five years, at a rate of 200,000 families per year.
Up to 2 billion dinars in savings, according to the chamber
The chamber president, Ali Kanzari, presented the proposal on Thursday, on the margins of the 4th edition of the International Energy Transition Fair (SITE 2026).
According to the chamber’s estimates, this program would reduce the cost of the energy subsidy by about 2 billion dinars over the same period.
The targeted population includes nearly one million subscribers, out of a total of 3.5 million subscribers of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG).
Financing via the Energy Transition Fund
According to Ali Kanzari, the project could be financed by the Energy Transition Fund, with the participation of banks in financing repayable projects.
This option, he believes, would help STEG progressively improve its financial balance.
A panel and a micro-inverter per household
Each beneficiary family would receive a solar panel and a micro-inverter. The latter converts the direct current produced by the panel into alternating current, directly usable in the dwelling.
The household would thus consume the electricity produced by its own panel and would only call on the electrical grid when solar production is insufficient.
