On the occasion of his hundredth birthday, which he celebrated on May 29 last, this Thursday, June 4, and Friday, June 5, Abdoulaye Wade is being honored in Senegal, a country he led from 2000 to 2012, and will receive a national tribute.

Founder of the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), lawyer, opponent, political prisoner, and then head of state: for the Senegalese there is no doubt, the man they nicknamed “Gorgui” – “the old man,” in Wolof – “is a national icon, a monument.”

The official tribute that will be paid this Thursday morning at the Grand Theatre of Dakar to Abdoulaye Wade, in the presence of the current head of state, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, is therefore well deserved.

Following the official ceremony, the singer Wally Seck will give, himself, a concert in honor of Abdoulaye Wade before the holding of a scientific colloquium, Friday, at the Monument of the African Renaissance, this gigantic statue created and inaugurated under his leadership. A statue that has also become the symbol of the grandeur and controversies of his presidency.
