In recent months, Libyan football seems determined to attract increasingly prominent names (players and coaches) and to position itself as one of the continent’s wealthiest new destinations.
Having left Le Havre, Sofiane Boufal has found a new destination for the least expected. At 32, the Moroccan international has signed with Al-Ittihad Tripoli, in Libya, where a massive salary is planned.
According to Africafoot’s figures, he will earn 5 million dollars per season, or about 4.3 million euros. A sum that would place him at the top of the salary hierarchy for players on the continent, equal to Fiston Mayele.
As a reminder, the Congolese forward had indeed left Pyramids FC to join Al-Ahli Tripoli, rival of Al-Ittihad, with a contract announced at 10 million dollars over two seasons, i.e., also 5 million per year.
Al-Ittihad, the league record holder with 18 titles, thus signs a player who has previously plied his trade with Lille, Southampton, Celta Vigo, Al-Rayyan, and Union Saint-Gilloise.
With the Tunisian Faouzi Benzarti at the technical helm, the Tripoli giant is capable of offering salaries barely accessible to the majority of African clubs.
