The criminal chamber specializing in terrorism cases at the Court of Appeal in Tunis has confirmed the conviction of the former public prosecutor at the Tunis Court of First Instance, Béchir Akremi, while increasing the prison sentences pronounced against him in two ongoing cases.
In the case concerning the assassination of martyr Chokri Belaïd, the Court decided to raise the prison sentence from 10 to 13 years. The charges include, notably, the act of a public official deliberately refraining from arresting a suspect to help him evade judicial proceedings, as well as deliberately concealing the truth by exploiting the prerogatives of his office.
In the second case, the same chamber also decided to raise from 13 to 17 years the sentences pronounced against Béchir Akremi, the leader of the Ennahdha movement Habib Ellouze and a third accused.
The charges brought in this case concern the provision of skills and expertise to persons linked to terrorist crimes, intellectual falsehood related to terrorist offenses, as well as the disclosure, by any means, of information for the benefit of persons linked to terrorist crimes.
