In an international context marked by the increasing use of austerity policies to address global economic crises, Tunisia finds itself facing a delicate equation: preserving its financial balances while responding to rising social expectations, particularly in terms of purchasing power.

In this framework, the choice of the President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, to maintain the salary increases provided for in the 2026 Finance Law stands as a political and economic gamble, raising questions about its feasibility in a tense environment.

A Presidential Call to Accelerate Implementation

The head of state reaffirmed that efforts continue to materialize several projects aimed at meeting citizens’ expectations, stressing the need to accelerate the adoption of implementing texts relating to salary and pension increases provided for in the 2026 Finance Law.

Speaking on Monday, April 6, 2026, during the commemoration of the 26th anniversary of the death of leader Habib Bourguiba at the Monastir mausoleum, Kaïs Saïed recalled that these increases have been legally enacted, but their implementation still depends on the publication of the regulatory texts.

Purchasing Power at the Heart of the Priorities

The President of the Republic stressed that the objective of these measures goes beyond the legal framework, aiming above all to concretely improve citizens’ purchasing power.

He emphasized that salaries must guarantee dignified living conditions, in a context marked by the rise in the cost of living, affirming that efforts are underway to revalorize these increases in line with current economic realities.

Between Announcements and Implementation: A Credibility Challenge

In this context, Kaïs Saïed called for a rapid translation of the texts into concrete measures, noting that economic indicators and statistics only make sense if they are reflected in the daily life of Tunisians.

He also reiterated the state’s commitment to guaranteeing fundamental rights, notably in the areas of health, transportation and education, as well as economic and social rights.

A Bet Under Economic Pressure

In a tense international environment and facing increasing internal constraints, the implementation of salary increases constitutes a real test for the Tunisian authorities.

Between social demands and budgetary imperatives, the success of this choice will largely depend on the state’s ability to reconcile economic reforms with citizens’ expectations, as well as the speed of execution of public policies.
