Under the theme “The Heritage and the Art of Architecture”, the 35th Heritage Month begins this Saturday, April 18, 2026, with festivities that will run until May 18, 2026. This initiative, organized annually by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, aims to raise public awareness of the importance of Tunisia’s architectural heritage, a true mirror of successive civilizations and a testament to Tunisian human genius in shaping space in harmony with the environment.

The event will begin in the historic town of Testour in Béja, in conjunction with the World Day for Monuments and Sites, highlighting Andalusian architecture which is an integral part of Tunisian heritage. The festivities will close on May 18, 2026 at the Chemtou Archaeological Museum in Jendouba, on the occasion of the International Museum Day.

This celebration aims to show that Tunisia’s architectural heritage is not merely a material inheritance, but the expression of human thought, a living symbol of the identity of Tunisian society and its values. From the palaces of the south to the ancient towns of the north and center, passing through the archaeological sites along the coast, this diversity testifies to the Tunisian’s ability to combine human creativity and the natural environment over the centuries.

The program also highlights traditional crafts that sustain this heritage, such as the zouq (stone, plaster and wood decoration), architectural carpentry, the forge, as well as the manufacture of ceramics and tiles, lime techniques, and geometric ornaments. These know-how are crucial for the preservation of the traditional architecture.
