The World Bank announced that it has approved financing of $332.5 million in support of two projects under the first phase of the “Tunisian Program for Water Security and Resilience”.
According to a World Bank press release, the two projects include one project focused on irrigation water security and resilience strengthening, for financing of $124 million, as well as a project dedicated to drinking water security and the strengthening of its sustainability, for an amount of $208.5 million.
The two projects aim to improve drinking water services for millions of Tunisians, modernize irrigated agriculture, as well as support employment and livelihoods in rural areas.
The “Tunisian Program for Water Security and Resilience” is a multiphase program, with a total budget of $700 million over a ten-year period. According to the World Bank, it is expected to create more than 4,000 permanent jobs and more than 13,000 temporary jobs, while helping Tunisia adapt to the worsening scarcity of water and the pressures related to climate change.
