Waste in Tunisia: Kais Saied Urges Ongoing, Relentless Action

The President of the Republic, Kais Saied, reviewed, during a meeting held in the evening of March 27 at the Carthage Palace with the Minister of the Interior, Khaled Nouri, the issue of the operations he had ordered to remove all kinds of waste from across the national territory.

He stressed that this initiative must not be limited to a short-term campaign lasting one or two days before the waste accumulates again for months. On the contrary, it must be part of a continuous action, carried out day and night, without interruption.

The head of state also insisted that it is unacceptable that he be forced, each time, to intervene to direct regional and local authorities, sometimes going so far as to identify the neighborhoods where waste has accumulated on the basis of the complaints received. He also deemed the argument of a lack of equipment to justify the absence of collection unacceptable, questioning whether these resources were available at the launch of the cleaning operations, then disappearing for months before new instructions.

He specified that this situation is abnormal and cannot endure, calling on each official to fully assume their administrative responsibilities. Any failure to perform the duty should, in his view, entail immediate consequences.

Contrary to some statements, the President refused to place the responsibility for these phenomena on the citizens. He recalled that many of them have mobilized, on several occasions, by taking part with their own means in cleaning campaigns, while facing attempts to discourage and spread pessimism.

He added that Tunisians, both men and women, once they feel co-owners of the public space, naturally act to preserve its cleanliness.

As long as this awareness remains widely spread within the population, all attempts at denigration will fail and the country will rid itself of the various forms of nuisances and abuses.
