On the occasion of her visit to Nuuk, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced a 200 million euro Global Gateway partnership package, which will be invested in Greenland and with Greenland this year and next year.
The European Union, Greenland and Denmark have also strengthened their partnership through a new joint declaration, signed in Nuuk by the President of the European Commission, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
“Greenland can count on the European Union. That was the message I conveyed during my last visit. Today, I am back to turn the results of our close cooperation into reality, with a new EU-Greenland partnership package worth 200 million euros. It will create new opportunities and help strengthen the EU’s presence and engagement, both in Greenland and in the Arctic. Because Greenland is a strategic ally and a trusted partner,” said the President of the European Commission, von der Leyen
According to the European Commission, the declaration and the investment package deepen cooperation between the European Union and Greenland across many areas, ranging from traditional sectors such as education and fishing to improving connectivity via satellite and cables, including hydropower and critical raw materials.
The program also emphasizes investments aimed at improving daily life in the country, notably through better housing, the development of sustainable tourism, and increased support for small businesses.
