According to the Algeria Press Service (APS), citing a report published by the global research and advisory firm Mordor Intelligence, Algeria is moving toward strengthening its position in the African renewable energy market, driven by significant projects launched in recent years to develop clean electricity and green hydrogen. The country is thus expected to record the fastest growth in this field during the 2026-2031 period.
The report indicates that Algeria is projected to register a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 42.51 % on the renewable energy market over the next five years.
This strong growth is mainly explained by Algeria’s call for tenders to implement solar projects with a total capacity of 1 gigawatt, as well as the country’s pivot toward investing in green hydrogen projects.
Within this framework, two solar plants, with a total capacity of 400 MW, were commissioned during the year, while an additional production capacity of more than 1 400 MW is planned for 2026, thanks to other projects that will be progressively commissioned.
The same source adds that these projects are part of the implementation of the first phase of the 3 200 MW solar photovoltaic capacity project, which plans to build 22 plants. This project itself fits within the framework of the ambitious national program aimed at raising solar energy production capacity to 15 000 MW by 2035.
