A 45-year-old Tunisian woman was found dead on Wednesday at her home in Montréal, Canada, under circumstances that are currently the subject of a police investigation.
According to information reported by Canadian media, the victim, identified as Leïla Ben Salem, was participating in a remote professional meeting when an individual allegedly burst into her apartment located on René-Lévesque Street, before assaulting her with a sharp object.
The Montreal police were alerted around 3:00 PM, local time, to an assault that occurred in the apartment. The emergency services arrived quickly and attempted to resuscitate the victim, but she died from her injuries.
At this stage, the identity of the presumed offender has not been established and the exact circumstances of the tragedy remain to be determined. Investigators are particularly looking to establish whether the suspect knew the victim and to clarify the circumstances leading up to the assault.
According to the same sources, Leïla Ben Salem had immigrated to Canada in 2013, two years after her marriage. She had separated from her husband in 2023 and a divorce proceeding was underway.
The victim was also the mother of a 12-year-old child.
The investigation continues to shed light on the circumstances of this death and to identify the person or persons responsible.
