Algeria Reassures Tunisia on Energy Supply and Opens New Avenues for Cooperation

The Algerian Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, received the minister in charge of managing the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy, Salah Zouari.

According to the Algerian Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, the meeting was devoted to examining ways to strengthen and develop the modalities of bilateral cooperation between the two countries, notably in the energy sector, in service of their common interests and in order to consolidate the prospects of the Algeria–Tunisia partnership.

The meeting took place in the presence of the Chief Executive Officer of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG), as well as the Director General of the Sonelgaz group, alongside several senior officials from the Algerian Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies.

The Algerian Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies indicated that the Algerian Minister of Energy reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to continuing its support to Tunisia, particularly in terms of energy supply.

The Algerian minister also underscored the importance of intensifying efforts and strengthening coordination and cooperation between the Sonelgaz group and the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG), in order to consolidate an exemplary partnership based on a forward-looking vision and to broaden the areas of cooperation to meet the future challenges and needs of the two countries.

In the same context, the Algerian minister renewed Algeria’s commitment to continue its energy exports to Tunisia during the summer of 2026, despite the exceptional circumstances that Algeria has experienced, illustrating Algeria’s willingness to stand by its sister Tunisia and to support its energy stability.

The same source added that the meeting also allowed for discussions on the proposal to build a 1,400-megawatt combined-cycle power plant, as well as the exploration of ways to reactivate the role of “Comilec.”

On his side, Salah Zouari welcomed the level of cooperation that exists between STEG and the Sonelgaz group, expressing Tunisia’s interest in benefiting from Algerian expertise and know-how in the energy sector. He also emphasized the need to strengthen and deepen this cooperation for the benefit of both countries.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the two parties renewed, according to the same source, their mutual willingness to intensify coordination and consultation and to broaden the fields of bilateral cooperation, thus contributing to stronger energy security and supporting the economic development efforts in the two brotherly countries.
