European Interclub Cups: Marseille Barred from Behind-the-Scenes Tactics, Just Like on the Pitch

Sitting seventh in the Ligue 1 standings with two matchdays remaining, Olympique de Marseille is still seeking a European place.

Furthermore, and even in a favorable scenario, Marseille may not play in Europe. The reason! The Phocéen club must deal with another issue, as L’Équipe has reported: non-compliance with the agreement signed with UEFA in 2022 as part of the financial fair play framework.

At that time, and to avoid heavier sanctions, the club owned by Frank McCourt had accepted a strict road map: return to balance over three seasons, with a deficit capped at 60 million euros. But over the three seasons involved, OM shows nearly 157 million euros in net losses…

Even reduced by some adjustments allowed by UEFA, the figures remain alarming and it seems difficult for the club to be in the clear. The file still needs to be reviewed by the UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB), with a decision expected by the end of the month.

With the threat of a fine, a limit on the number of players on European lists, or even an exclusion from the club’s next participation in a European competition.
