The investigating judge at the Tunis Court of First Instance issued, yesterday, a detention order against a banking executive employed at a financial institution in the capital, in connection with a suspected embezzlement case.

According to the initial elements of the file, the amounts involved would exceed 160,000 dinars, gradually withdrawn from the accounts of several clients.

Withdrawals and transfers carried out without the clients’ knowledge

The case began after the filing of several complaints and the report submitted by citizens to the management of the banking institution, following the discovery of withdrawals and suspicious financial transfers made from their accounts without their knowledge.

Following an internal financial audit that revealed suspicions of embezzlement, the management of the institution informed the prosecutor’s office, which ordered the opening of a judicial investigation.

The suspect allegedly exploited his position

Early investigations reportedly revealed that the suspect would have taken advantage of his position and of his access to the bank’s computer system to carry out transfer operations and to falsify certain documents, with the aim of diverting funds deposited in clients’ accounts to his own account.

A detention order issued by the investigating judge

The file was forwarded to the investigating judge at the Tunis Court of First Instance. After questioning the suspect, the magistrate decided to issue a detention order in prison against him.

The investigation continues in order to determine all the operations involved and to establish any responsibilities in this case.
