The Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) continues to hold the largest share of electricity production, contributing 91% of total national production as of the end of July 2026, while the share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources stood at 9%.
Among renewable energies, solar represents the most significant share, accounting for about 8.10% of total production, thus establishing itself as the main renewable source. Wind energy comes in second with 0.6%, while the contribution of hydroelectric power remains very low, at only 0.07%.
By the end of July 2026, national electricity production reached approximately 12,333 GWh, recording a 6% increase compared to the end of July 2025. During the same period, electricity intended for local consumption also rose by 5%.
During this period, the electricity production fleet relied almost entirely on natural gas for electricity production, which accounted for about 91% of the production mix. It is also worth noting the notable increase in electricity imports, notably from Algeria, which contributed to meeting 10% of the national electricity needs
