Wajih Mosfar, President of the Regional Chamber of Jewelry Artisans of Sfax, indicated in a statement to Tunisia Numérique that gold prices had recorded a notable decline in the recent period, with a drop of about 10 dinars per gram. This development he considers as an opportunity for those looking to buy new or second-hand gold.

Meanwhile, Wajih Mosfar renewed his call to allow artisans to take the competition for obtaining the “maker’s mark,” requesting that its organization be planned within the framework of the State budget for 2027.

Appel à organiser le concours du « poinçon de maître »

Wajih Mosfar explained that a number of artisans have been waiting for several years for the possibility to take the competition that would allow obtaining the “maker’s mark.” According to him, obtaining this mark gives the artisan the right to source every month a quantity of gold from the Central Bank.

He added that, despite the repeated promises to organize this competition since the 2024 budget, it has not yet taken place to date, according to his statements.

Wajih Mosfar launched a call to the legislative and executive authorities as well as to the President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, so that they intervene with the concerned parties to schedule this competition within the 2027 budget. A measure that would, according to him, offer new prospects to several artisans and young people working in the sector.

He also stressed that some artisans accumulate more than 35 years of experience in the trade and are still waiting for the opportunity to take this competition.

The price per gram has fallen by about 10 dinars

Regarding the market, Wajih Mosfar indicated that gold prices had fallen by about 10 dinars per gram in the last period, estimating that current levels represent an opportunity for buying new or used gold.

According to his estimates, the 18-carat gold per gram intended for melting trades at between 295 and 300 dinars, while the per-gram price of new gold of the same calibre ranges between 380 and 390 dinars.

As for 24-carat gold, he specified that the price per gram of new gold reached around 410 dinars on the local market, versus 392 dinars on the international market, according to the figures he provided.

For 9-carat gold, he indicated that the gram of gold intended for melting stood at around 120 dinars, while the gram of new gold of the same grade fluctuated between 200 and 210 dinars.

New models being manufactured in Sfax

The president of the Regional Chamber of Jewelry Artisans of Sfax also revealed that most of the region’s workshops had begun manufacturing new models.

He advised those preparing events such as a wedding to wait between one month and one and a half months in order to discover the new creations currently in preparation.

He also estimated that current price levels could represent an investment buying opportunity.

Regarding silver, Wajih Mosfar indicated that prices remained stable on the local market, at around 6 dinars per gram.
