The project to improve potable water supply and strengthen water security in the Siliana and Kef governorates was among the main points examined during the periodic meeting of the Regional Commission responsible for accelerating the realization of public projects in the Siliana Governorate, held this Friday, July 17, 2026 at the governorate headquarters.
This project is part of the strategy to ensure the needs of rural and urban areas and to address the weakness of clean water resources in the two governorates, through the transfer of water from the Barbara dam.
The latest progress of the project was presented during the meeting. It was confirmed that the route of the water transfer pipeline had been definitively selected and that the preliminary study as well as the feasibility study had been completed.
The project has now entered its final phase, devoted to the preparation of the tender documents, which should be ready by the end of August 2026.
This is one of the most important hydraulic projects planned in the region. Its total cost is estimated at about 800 million dinars.
The project foresees the construction of a water transfer network with a total length of about 132 kilometers, including 86 kilometers of pipes with a diameter of 1,600 millimeters and 46 kilometers of pipes with a diameter of 1,200 millimeters.
It also includes the construction of five pumping stations and three balancing reservoirs.
Once commissioned, the project will strengthen water resources and secure the supply of drinking water for residents of the Siliana and Kef governorates, notably in a context marked by rising water demand and a decrease in local resources.
Note that the Barbara Dam water transfer project has been included in the Development Plan 2026-2030.
Research continues to mobilize the necessary funding for its realization, this project being regarded as one of the major investments on which the region relies to strengthen water security and improve the quality as well as the continuity of water supply services.
