The Beja Regional Commission for Agricultural Development organized, this Wednesday, an information day dedicated to the maintenance and adjustment of combine harvesters, as well as to fire prevention.
This meeting was held at the cereal collection center belonging to the Mutual Agricultural Services Society “SMA” in Medjez El Bab, in collaboration with the National Institute of Field Crops, the Sectoral Training Center in Agricultural Machinery at Jougar, in the El Fahs delegation, and the Regional Union of Agriculture and Fisheries.
More than 60 farmers involved
More than 60 farmers producing cereals, rapeseed, and legumes took part in this field day, alongside owners and operators of combine harvesters from various delegations, notably those from the southern part of Beja governorate.
On this occasion, the head of the Plant Production Department at the Beja Regional Commission for Agricultural Development, Abdelmajid Ouled Sghir, indicated to the TAP news agency that this initiative is part of the preparations for the harvest season and the cereal collection of 2026.
Two regional days and local meetings
According to the official, two regional information days have been planned, the first in Medjez El Bab and the second in Beja Sud at the end of this week, for the benefit of farmers in the south and north of the governorate.
He added that a series of small local meetings will also be organized across all the region’s delegations, to ensure the maintenance and adjustment of the 467 combine harvesters recorded in the governorate.
Abdelmajid Ouled Sghir called on farmers to actively participate in these meetings in order to safeguard cereal, forage, and legume harvests.
Maintenance of machines and fire prevention
The information day included a practical session aimed at technicians and farmers active in the cereals and large crops sector.
This session was delivered by experts from the Sectoral Training Center in Agricultural Machinery at Jougar. It focused in particular on the methods of maintaining combine harvesters, with special emphasis on measures to reduce fire risks.
A representative of Civil Protection in Beja also presented an intervention on fire prevention procedures in storage facilities and fields of large crops.
Reducing losses and securing the harvest
Participants stressed the need to properly adjust the machines according to the nature of the crops and working conditions.
The importance of periodic and preventive maintenance of equipment before the start of the harvest was also highlighted, as was the adoption of appropriate techniques to limit grain losses during harvesting, transport, and storage.
The meeting also served to raise farmers’ awareness of fire risks during the harvest season, as well as rapid intervention methods and proper management in case of a fire outbreak.
Towards a safe and successful harvest season
The speakers ultimately stressed the importance of strengthening coordination among the various parties involved, in order to guarantee a successful and safe harvest season.
The objective is to improve yields, preserve crops, and obtain a higher quality product, in a context where the safety of fields and the proper preparation of agricultural equipment constitute essential concerns for farmers.
