It’s the tango of the Americans in Francesca Albanese’s case. This Friday, Washington denied the lifting of sanctions against the United Nations’ special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territory.

For reminder, a note published on the website of the U.S. Treasury indicated that sanctions against Francesca Albanese had been lifted. She had been placed on an international blacklist, preventing her from using credit cards or carrying out many banking operations.

An American judge suspended on Wednesday the sanctions imposed last year by Washington on Francesca Albanese.

“Protecting freedom of expression is always in the public interest,” wrote the federal judge Richard Leon in his opinion accompanying his decision to suspend the sanctions last week.

This Italian citizen has repeatedly criticized the treatment of Palestinians by Israel in her role as the United Nations Human Rights Council’s special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had also reproached her for having recommended to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
