France: Up to 75,000 Business Bankruptcies Expected in 2026

As of June 30, the Association for the management of the Salary Guarantee regime (AGS) announced that it has mobilized 1.31 billion euros to guarantee the payment of salaries for companies in collective proceedings, i.e., up 19.4% year on year.

“If this trend continues, the regime could surpass the unprecedented threshold of 2.6 billion euros in advances by the end of the year, a level never reached since its creation,” says AGS.

And adding that this acceleration occurs in a context where forecasts now anticipate between 71,000 to 75,000 corporate defaults in 2026, confirming the amplification of difficulties observed for more than two years.

After a year 2025 already historic, marked by more than 2.2 billion euros in advances, indicators for the first half of 2026 show a new scale-up.

Beyond the amounts committed, AGS has said it supported 157,983 employees, i.e., 12% more than a year earlier, while nearly 14,000 new procedures requesting AGS intervention were opened.

“This evolution reflects a transformation in the nature of defaults: the share of large and medium-sized enterprises assisted by AGS is increasing, as is the number of employees affected, leading to heavier social consequences,” explains AGS.
