Road accidents in Tunisia have fallen by 19.41% as of August 5, 2026, according to the latest release from the National Observatory for Road Safety, under the Ministry of the Interior. But paradoxically the number of deaths has risen sharply, by more than 10% compared with the same period in 2025.
Since the start of this year, 2,712 accidents have been recorded, compared to 3,365 in the same period last year. The number of people killed on the road rose from 708 to 781, while the proportion of those injured decreased, from 4,411 to 3,554, a drop of 19.43%. In short, fewer accidents and fewer injuries but more lethal collisions.
Moreover, the statistics indicate that inattention and a lack of vigilance are the leading causes of accidents, accounting for 28.36% of cases, followed by speeding (22.68%), then failure to yield and crossing the roadway.
Regarding fatal accidents, excessive speed remains the main cause, responsible for 37.39% of deaths, ahead of inattention (15.75%) and not respecting traffic on the right (10.24%).
April was the most critical month, with 426 cases, while May was the most tragic month, with 124 deaths.
Finally, the Tunis Governorate tops the ranking of the most accident-prone regions (11.17%), followed by Mahdia (8.19%) and Nabeul (7.89%).
