Jamel Msallem, a vocal advocate for civil liberties, dies

The Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights announced, in a statement released on Tuesday evening, the death of human rights activist Jamal Abdel Nasser Msallem, former president of the organization.

The deceased passed away in the afternoon, leaving behind a long career marked by commitment to rights, freedoms, and democratic values.

A tenure at the helm of the league from 2016 to 2022

Jamal Msallem had chaired the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights from 2016 to 2022. According to the League’s statement, he had devoted a significant portion of his activist journey to defending human rights, as well as to promoting the values of freedom, dignity, and justice.

Through his responsibilities within the organization, he contributed to strengthening its national role, consolidating its independence, and asserting its presence at the various stages of mobilization in support of rights and freedoms.

A constant commitment to democracy and the rule of law

The League also praised the deceased’s principled positions, recalling that he was known for his steadfast attachment to the values of democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.

The organization stated that with his passing, the Tunisian human rights movement loses one of its most prominent activists, as well as a figure who left a clear imprint on Tunisia’s journey in defense of rights and freedoms.

Condolences to his family and to the family of human rights

In its statement, the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights offered its sincere condolences to the deceased’s family, to his loved ones, to his fellow activists, and to the entire family of human rights.

It also paid tribute to his militant path and to his valuable contributions to the service of rights, freedoms, and human values in Tunisia.
