Free Constitutional Party Denounces Ban on Demonstration in Support of Abeer Morsi

The Free Constitutional Party issued a strong statement today, Wednesday, June 11, 2025, condemning what it described as a governmental decision to prevent them from organizing a solidarity protest in support of their leader, Abeer Morsi, in front of the Court House. The party claims that the authorities blocked the planned demonstration, which was scheduled to occur ahead of Morsi’s court hearing tomorrow, Thursday.

The court hearing in question involves a case brought against Morsi by the Independent High Authority for Elections. The case stems from her public comments during a press conference held by the party on December 9, 2022, during which she publicly expressed her disapproval of the legislative elections held that year. The party asserts that the decision to curtail the demonstration reflects attempts to suppress dissent and limit political expression.

Details of the Protest and Legal Proceedings

The party’s statement emphasizes that the demonstration was intended as a show of solidarity with Abeer Morsi, who is currently facing legal proceedings. They describe the authorities’ actions as an obstruction to the right of assembly and free expression, fundamental rights protected under national and international law.

According to the party’s declaration, the legal team defending Morsi decided to boycott the court session, as the Public Prosecutor’s office did not allow them access to the courtroom. The lawyers refused to submit their legal filings, protesting what they called the unconstitutionality of the trial process and the illegitimacy of Decree No. 54 of 2022, a legislative decree concerning crimes related to information systems and communications. They argue that this decree unjustly targets political opponents and restricts freedoms.

As stated in the party’s release, the defense team for Abeer Morsi withdrew from the courtroom in protest, refusing to participate under what they deem an illegitimate judicial process. They also criticized the decree for infringing on constitutional rights and questioned its legal validity.

The situation has generated significant controversy, with supporters accusing authorities of suppressing political dissent and violating democratic principles. Critics argue that such measures undermine the rule of law and diminish citizens’ rights to assemble and express their opinions freely.
