The President of the United States, Donald Trump, and his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, are due to meet on Monday, September 21 at 5:35 p.m. local time (11:35 p.m. in Paris) in New York, on the sidelines of the opening of the United Nations General Assembly.
The White House schedule, published Sunday evening, revealed that this highly anticipated bilateral meeting will take place shortly after the White House occupant’s meeting with the mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani.
This New York visit promises to be busy for Emmanuel Macron, who arrives in the American metropolis after a notable stopover in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, where on Sunday he met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, an occasion for the two leaders to display their unity and to defend the “sovereignty” of their countries.
During this meeting, they called for a deep rapprochement in the face of pressures from Donald Trump, who regularly threatens Canada with annexation and has recently published a map covering the region, including the small French territory in the North Atlantic.
Rendez-vous with Volodymyr Zelensky
Beyond this face-to-face with Donald Trump, Emmanuel Macron intends to devote his New York stay to international crises, notably with a planned meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The French president is also due to meet Middle Eastern leaders, including Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian.
He will also engage with the world’s leading AI players, in line with Paris’s aim to see the issue taken more seriously within international institutions.
During his scheduled address on Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly podium, the head of state intends to defend “an effective multilateralism” in the face of what the French presidency had described Friday in a press briefing as the United Nations’ “dubious” effectiveness, lamenting the gradual disengagement of the leaders of the five permanent members of the Security Council.
