Hajj 2026: Tunisian pilgrim dies, rest of pilgrims in stable condition

The head of the management of the Directorate of the Pilgrimage and a member of the Office for Tunisian Pilgrims’ Affairs, Anis Mezoughi, indicated that a single death had been registered among the Tunisian pilgrims. It concerns the pilgrim Mohamed Barhoumi, from the El Hichria delegation in the Sidi Bouzid Governorate, who died at his residence in Mecca due to the deteriorating health condition from which he had been suffering since his arrival from Tunisia.

In a statement given this Monday to the Tunis Afrique Presse Agency, he specified that the general health status of the rest of the Tunisian pilgrims remains stable, despite the fact that the majority are elderly and that some suffer from chronic diseases. He added that most pilgrims who arrived in Mecca have completed the rites of tawaf and sa’i, whether it was the arrival tawaf and sa’i of the Hajj, or the tawaf and sa’i of the Umrah. The pilgrims coming from Medina have, for their part, performed the visit to the Rawdha Charifa and the holy sites.

He also stressed that the health supervision is provided continuously, with the accompaniment of every flight by a medical team consisting of a physician and a nurse, in addition to daily visits to pilgrims at their places of residence and night shifts, with no reports of multiple health complications.

Mezoughi indicated that preparations for the Day of Arafat are continuing at the logistical and organizational levels, through the provision of transport means and camps, as well as the intensification of awareness and orientation sessions for the benefit of the pilgrims, under the supervision of the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Preventive field visits are also organized to identify travel routes and the locations of the camps.

Regarding recommendations, Mezoughi urged the pilgrims, particularly in the face of rising temperatures, to drink plenty of water, to ensure sufficient rest, to avoid fatigue before departure to Arafat, and to respect the instructions of the different components of the mission.

It should be recalled that the number of Tunisian pilgrims for the 1447 AH / 2026 season approaches 10,982 pilgrims. The first flights to the holy sites began on May 7, 2026, while return flights will begin on June 1 and will continue until June 14, 2026.

Available data also indicate the scheduling of dozens of flights for transporting the pilgrims, at a rate of 260 to 265 pilgrims per flight.

It is worth noting that the Tunisian Hajj mission is composed of integrated delegations — administrative, health, religious and services — tasked with ensuring a comprehensive supervision of the pilgrims, to guarantee the performance of the rites under the best possible conditions.
