Tunisia reduces global energy consumption by 9% in 2008
Tunis, January 7, 2009- Figures recently released by the Ministry of industry, energy and small and medium enterprises show that Tunisians have reduced their energy consumption by 9% in 2008.
Energy saving sensitization campaigns, including the promotion of the use of alternative energies seem to have paid off, enabling the country to save some 800,000 tons of oil equivalent. The aim of the campaign is to reach savings of 1 million tons of oil equivalent by 2011.
In comparison, in 2007, Europe was able to reduce its energy consumption by 2, 2% .
Observers note that this downward trend in energy consumption has been noticeable these past three years
In 2006 Tunisia was able to save 400,000 tons of oil equivalent and in 2007 it saved 700,000 tons.
On a global scale, experts estimate that the demand for energy will grow by 50% by 2030. The demand for petrol should increase from 87 million barrels per day currently to 113 million barrels per day by 2030. Emerging countries are expected to increase their consumption by 85% against 19% in industrialized countries.
