Bizerta revisits its heritage

TUNISIAONLINENEWS- The city of Bizerta is known as the oldest and most European city in Tunisia. It was founded around 1000 BC by Phoenicians from Tyre .

Initially a small Phoenician harbour, the city came under the influence of Carthage after the defeat of Agathocles during the Punic Wars . The city was then occupied by the Romans , conquered by the Arabs in 647 (who gave the city its current name), by the troops of Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire in 1535, and then by the Turks in 1574. The city then became a corsair harbour and struggled against the French and the Venetians.

Under the French protectorate Bizerta housed a large French military harbor. It was the last of Tunisian cities to be freed by the Tunisian liberation army.

It goes without saying that with such a rich history, the city is keen to preserve its heritage.

Lately,  a series of heritage preservation projects have been launched in the governorate of Bizerta. The overall cost of these rehabilitation projects is expected to reach 10 million dinars.

The projects aim at restoring and promoting historical monuments and archeological vestiges such as the ancient Punic port or harbor, Quay Khemaies Ternan, the Andalusian fort, the Ottoman ramparts, the Medina, the mosque of the Kasbah” as well as the “zaouias” of Sidi El Mastaoui,  Sidi Jalloul and ‘Sidi Salem.
Bizerta has also witnessed the setting up of other projects including the rehabilitation of the Ottoman fort in Ghar El Melh, the Archaeological Museum of Utica, the mosque of “Sidi Ahmed Boudhnia” and the ” Zaouia” of Sidi Ben Aissa .

Bizerta’s regional authorities have undertaken to involve potential sponsors, especially among university graduates in the management of this historical and civilizational heritage.
