Tunisia at Arab conference on family violence in Beirut

TUNISIAONLINENEWS- Tunisia recently took part in the Arab conference on family violence held on November 18 to 19, 2009 in the Lebanese capital, under the theme “a secure society, a stable family “, at the headquarters of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia(UN-ESCWA).

The event was an opportunity for participating countries to share experiences on this social phenomenon and set up a common Arab strategy to treat it this social scourge.

In her address, Ms. Saida Agrebi, the chairwoman of the Tunisian Mothers Organization (OTM), stressed Tunisia’s experience in achieving gender equality following approach based on partnership.  She evoked the Tunisian personal status code that enabled the empowerment  of Tunisian women since the country’s independence.

In this regard, Mr. Agrebi recalled President Ben Ali’s initiatives to promote tolerance and dialogue as constant values governing the relationship between individuals and communities, especially among youth.

During the meeting, Ms. Agrebi announced that the Arab Women Organization (AWO) under the chairmanship of Mr. Leila Ben Ali, is planning to organize in October 2010 in Tunis, its third congress on the issue of Arab women key partner in sustainable development action. This conference coincides with the celebration of the anniversary of the National Women’s Summit in China, “Beijing + 15″.
