Taking part in the regional workshop organized by the Sahara-Sahel Observatory (SSO) and the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) on the theme “For a Better Air Quality in North Africa” from November 23 to 25, 2009, Mr. Mlika highlighted the major sources of air pollution in the region and their negative impacts on people’s health, environment and development.

He pointed out that the Tunisian environment and sustainable development strategy has helped the country solve the problems caused by rapid urban expansion, industrial development and transportation.

Mr. Mlika stressed that Tunisia has continuously endeavored to encourage partnership and that AREMEDD has launched a program on the theme “Clean Air for All.” The program, the first of its kind, will be implemented with the assistance of environmental associations and public and private companies.

Tunisia was one of the first countries in Africa to establish the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in 2005; the country has also ratified the framework convention on climate change in 1993, in addition to ratifying the Kyoto Protocol in 2003.
