Tunisia takes part in 4th Internet Governance Forum in Egypt

TUNISIAONLINENEWS- Ten Tunisian representatives from civil society are taking part in the 4th meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), which is taking place from November 15 to 18, 2009 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

1,500 governmental and non- governmental representatives are taking part in the fourth IGF meeting to discuss future of the Internet.

Referring to the Tunis Agenda for the information society issued in the World Summit on the Information Society (2005 WSIS in Tunis), participants focused on international solidarity to bridge the digital divide in developing countries, reduce poverty , enhance national capacity building and the promote technological development. The forum will also discuss the multilateral, democratic and transparent management of the Internet as well as the use of multilingualism in the Internet development environment.

In her address, Mr. Saida Agrebi chairwoman of Tunisian Mothers Organization (OTM) and co-coordinator of the Non- Governmental Organizations (ONG) and United Nations Organization for Africa, stressed Tunisia’s achievements in terms of disseminating new communication technologies (ICTs) and the Internet as well as Tunisia’s initiatives at the international level namely solidarity in general and digital solidarity in particular.

Besides, Mrs. Agrebi highlighted efforts achieved by Mrs. Leila Ben Ali, the spouse of the President of the Republic and the Arab Women Organization (AWO) chairwoman, to promote women’s empowerment, notably through their access to ICTs and to help youths benefit of digital progress.

She also mentioned President Ben Ali’s initiative to create a World Solidarity Fund so as to eradicate poverty in the world which was adopted in 2002 by the United Nations ‘General Assembly.

On the sidelines of the event, Mrs. Faïza Azzouz was elected chairwoman of the African Civil Society on Information Society Association (ACSIS), during the general assembly held on Monday.
